Ultra Violet is the newest “Color of the Year” from Pantone. We’ve gathered some inspirational rooms and some practical items featuring this bold purple shade. If you’re wondering how to incorporate this – or any other – trend into your own home, we have some ideas for you!

The beginning of a year inspires us to focus and make positive changes. One reason we love to be inspired by the color of the year is because it provides an opportunity to look beyond our comfort zone, to push ourselves toward something new. Our living spaces can be a force of change in other areas of life, especially when those spaces reflect something new instead of the same old things you’re so used to seeing you don’t even notice them. Your daily surroundings affect your mood, whether they stimulate, calm, or annoy you. Even something small can give you a mental boost, especially if it’s eye-catching, problem-solving, or simply luxurious.

Read on for a few tips that you can use to incorporate any trend into your home!

This wallpaper featuring violet birds is a great way to add pattern to a room. Wallpaper had a bad reputation for a while, but it’s working its way into more and more designs lately. Something like this feels fresh and modern and adds something that simple paint can’t quite match.

An interesting accent piece to hang on the wall, like this mirror, is an easy way to add a new style. It requires very little commitment and won’t overwhelm your space.

For something a little more bold but just as easy to change out, try a colorful pillow. If you like purple in small doses, something that includes other colors may make it easier to incorporate in your space.

For something pretty and functional, try a unique clock. Put one in your bathroom to keep you moving on time in the mornings! Or use it in your office and have something gorgeous to brighten your desk. As a bonus, items made from natural materials like this are often truly one-of-a-kind.

If you love the idea of purple but it just won’t work with your existing style, what about something small but functional like a corkscrew? It doesn’t have to be out on display, but you’ll still get the benefits of seeing that pop of color when you use it. Sometimes our utilitarian items get used beyond their ideal lifespan. When it’s time to get something new, choose one that puts a smile on your face. It can really feel like you’re treating yourself, even when it’s something small and simple.

On the topic of treating yourself, a pretty cup and saucer can be a great item to bring in another color or pattern that you like but don’t tend to use. This applies to anything else that you use for a simple morning or afternoon ritual, whether that’s tea or coffee, a quick walk, a music break, or whatever you enjoy. Make the items you use a little more fancy or a little different than your “normal” items and you’ll automatically elevate that ritual a bit.

One of the most obvious ways to add purple is through the surface materials, from paint to tile to rugs and other textiles. We rounded up some purple tiles in our showroom. It can have more of an impact than some other choices due to its uniqueness. It’s a slightly unusual color, but we do have several great options.

We wanted to showcase a few rooms that used purple in a big way as well. This room below brings in color with furniture and cushions. They mixed purple with silvery gray for a refined, regal feeling.

While purple doesn’t have to be for kids’ rooms, it often works well in them. This child’s room uses lavender with deeper purple and aqua accents to create a cheerful, bright space.

Ultra Violet is a forward-looking color. Pantone says it “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” It’s a blue-toned purple, but it is clearly purple, not blue. It works well with many other colors, and Pantone has some interesting palettes showing the versatility of this shade.

As you can see, there are many ways to incorporate this color – or any other – into your home. When you see a trend that you like but don’t want to redesign your home around it, look for ways to bring a smaller piece of it into your life. If you do want to go all out with something new, don’t be afraid of change! We benefit from enjoying the things that surround us, and when our homes reflect who we are, we can be ourselves more fully in them.
